The Last Leaf

May I never be the last leaf
still clinging to the tree,
rattling out her self-pitying song
though autumn’s long since gone.

May I be, instead, one of the wiser ones
who’s known enough seasons to see
that to hold on tight is worse, indeed,
than to loosen, flutter, and be free.
